Hey, so my key fob used to just unlock and lock my car. Now, I'm itching to soup it up with remote start and tailgate release. The thing is, I’m clueless about how to do it. But I’m all in for a DIY adventure. Any tech-savvy peeps out there who’ve cracked the code on programming their own key fob? Any tips or must-have tools I should be looking at?

trying to dive into more DIY car stuff lately, so I totally get the excitement for adding remote start and tailgate release! I haven’t personally done a key fob upgrade like that yet, but I’ve been doing a lot of reading up on it for my own ride. 😅

it sounds like you’ll need an OBD-II scanner tool to program new functions. Some of the more advanced ones can let you unlock extra features on the key fob. seems pretty cool. I’ve also seen people mention looking at your owner's manual for any special key fob programming instructions. always a good move if you want to avoid surprises!. But if you're into tinkering, I've heard AlphaOBD is a good app for RAM trucks that lets you customize all kinds of things, including key fob functions. 🤔

As for tools, maybe just a basic OBD-II scanner and your phone/laptop should be enough to get started. I’m still learning 😁

if you’re up for a DIY project, programming a key fob can be a lot of fun! For remote start and tailgate release, you’ll need an OBD-II scanner with programming capabilities. Start by turning your key to the “On” position (without starting the engine) and connect the OBD-II scanner to your truck’s port. Many recommend the AlfaOBD tool for Ram trucks as it’s pretty user-friendly and has the right options for adding features like remote start and tailgate release.

Once you’re in the AlfaOBD app, look under “Body Computer” and find the options for key fob customization. Follow the prompts, and you should be able to activate the features. Just a heads-up: some features might need a hardware module, so check if your truck has those parts already installed.

oh diving into a DIY key fob upgrade! Adding remote start and tailgate release sounds awesome. I’d grabb a compatible OBD-II scanner like the AlfaOBD, which works with RAM systems. gives you access to all the hidden settings, so you can activate features like remote start if the hardware’s there. You’ll need to do a bit of exploring in the app. it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

make sure your truck’s battery is fully charged before you start, and don’t rush through the steps, you’ll get the best results by being patient. I was nervous at first, but it’s actually easier than it sounds. 👍

If you want to program extra functions like remote start and tailgate release, you’ll need an advanced OBD-II scanner that can access the deeper settings in your Ram’s system. I’d recommend the AlfaOBD or a similar tool that lets you access and modify the Body Control Module. These scanners let you turn on new features without needing the dealership, which is a huge bonus.

For remote start, just connect your scanner, locate the “Key Fob” options in the Body Control section, and activate the remote start and tailgate release features. You’ll want to be cautious here—make sure you’re following each step carefully because some settings can impact other vehicle functions. Also, ensure your fob hardware supports these features, as some fobs may need an upgrade.

I’ve been exactly where you are! It took me a while, but I managed to add remote start to my Ram’s key fob with the right tools. You’ll need an OBD-II scanner, like the AlfaOBD, which works like a charm on RAM models. It gives you access to the Body Control Module, where you can add features like remote start if the hardware’s already installed. The app has a bit of a learning curve, but I found it super satisfying to do it myself.

One thing I noticed is that having a backup power source can help, just in case anything goes wrong mid-programming. Also, make sure the fob is compatible with remote start. It’s a bit of an adventure, but totally worth it. 😊
